Saving a Historic Landmark
Hollywood, CA
In early 1991, Raubi Sundher heard talk of demolishing the oldest standing movie theater in Hollywood. The Hollywood Theatre, designed by architect Claude Balch and built in 1913, stood in tattered condition across the street from the Hollywood Wax Museum. Its art deco façade was on the verge of being hidden behind wooden planks. Unwilling to see its demise, Raubi determined that he could preserve the building and help the other businesses in Hollywood by creating another attraction. His development of the Guinness World Records Museum accomplished both goals. The building is a National Register Landmark and still retains its original marquee.
